Peaceful LIFE.

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Was talking to Alvin online a few days ago, and we got into a heated debate over if the world should give China a break. Alvin said that China has been stopping UN actions in the Burma genocide, because China has much national interest in the country. I know that it is not a right thing to do, but that does NOT justify the whole western world coming together like a big bully and chew out every bit of China.

We should view things and make criticisms as they are. Not pull out every little bit of the dirty laundries in a country n hope that together, it would bring the country down. That is sneaky. Do it with integrity if u can.

I told Alvin, I would not agree with him in criticising china on the pure basis that I still consider myself a Chinese. Of course I am a Singaporean for sure too. It is not mutually exclusive. I will elaborate that in a little while. So i wrote him a letter.. as below:

.i haf been thinking abt ur argument on the burma-china thing.. (see i am not a non-reflective person!)

and i think while it is understandable tt u r taking this moral high ground to criticise china for ignoring the massacre/genocie/whicheverterminologyused, it is important to see that by condemning china and china alone, it is a very hypocritical n double standard thing to do. While China is not flawless, it is definitely not totally and completely flawed too.

Sometimes, it is always the extent of how far someone would go for something that we debate over right? How much is too much? How far can we go as a country when it comes to protecting our own interest before it is too much? ever thought abt singapore's stand in this too??

I was reading this article http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/singapore-a-friend-indeed-to-burma/2007/09/30/1191090945019.html thus the thought.

it is an old issue. but it is the same idea. i am just angry that the world attacks china from every single aspect. THUS give china a break. Be fair. Do not attack one country, pull out every single dirty laundry it has like a big bully. and while i might not seem like i appreciate wtaever u said abt china.. i wuld definitely not agree with u outrightly because i believe that stuffs likethis are meant for the people to resolve on their own. not for others to sae. u might think tt it might b a realli silly thing to ask the so-called 'brainwashed' pple to provide a form of surveillance to the communist party, cos it is as useless as asking a narcissist to look out for others and to be critical of himself, BUT (well, since the international favourate sentence structure seems to be in the form of: china is doing this.. althought another country also does something like this.. BUT china is worse... I shall use this structure too, just for dramatic effect) trust that the society is changing, chinese people arent as ignorant and stupid as u think. just cos u r not realli closely involved in the chinese society and all the web debates and engagements of the people that the chinese govt does not report, does not mean tt the people are stupid and dont know wat is goign on n haf no mind of their own.

a pity u dont read too much chinese. or else u can go to certain chinese forums and get more inspired n more understandings of the way people think. of course u mite not associate chinese govt w the chinese people, thus it is right to criticise the govt n makign it a separate entity fr the chinese people. but do note that as an outsider, when u criticise one establishment, liek it or not, people take it personally. unless u r one of them, then criticising the govt is more acceptable n the pple are less defensive. like me. I think u make sense in wat u say, but the way u put ur ideas across, if u need the ideas to actually get thru to pple, needs to be more sensitive and empathetic.

i trust tt u can be an effective communicator, and advocate of certain ideals.. but bear in mind that people need to feel respected before they respect ur ideas.

i am just still not over the whole damning china thing... just tot i shuld let u know tt nxt time u wanna make mi 'admit the faults' of china.. bear in mind that i wuld never bitch abt china or singapore to an outsider.

I think i am just very defensive when he approached this topic with so much disrespect for my identity as a Chinese. He always jokes about me being a China country girl or sth.. If u have no respect for another person's cultural identity and origin, u cant get ani idea into tt person.

I hope that he learns to be less sanctimonious and obnoxious, learn to see from another person's perspective, see and understand why people are still proud of China despite of all the flaws in the system (no, it is not cos of brain wash mind u). Loving the land might be argued as different from loving the system, but it is not all that different. I see it more like loving a person.. like a Mom loving a child.. Im sure u have heard of stories where a mom just gives money to the useless son who gambles away althe money and beats her up for more.. and she still loves him and wants to protect him. It is not the right approach we should go if we want the best for the country, of course, but that would be the approach taht we would take when everyone else seems to be ganging up against us. We would be forced into defense, and we would be forced to unite and support the establishment which might not even be for the best of the country. Why? cos at least we feel respected.

Men might not be able to survive on pride and hope alone. But we definitely feel more worthy alive.

On the point tt my identity as a China-Chinese and a Singaporean are not mutually exclusive. It is not an attempted mockery tt Singapore is so China-fied that it is as good as being part of China. It is a serious issue I have been considering which has further made me think in the most recent olympic games when China and Singapore were fighting for the table tennis gold medal.

Admittedly, I wanted China to win. Not because I love Singapore any less. But because China would need it more to prove something. There are always different priorities in me when I am put in a position like that. In this case, the ability to win more gold than America and thus claim the first top position in Olympics for China would be a greater priority than Singapore winning the first gold medal in the entire history since independence. If tables turned, and Singapore is in China's position, I would have supported Singapore to win. It is not country specific, but issue specific.

I guess not many people believe me on that. Especially the people in Aachen. But I dont need people to anyway, what matters is that I know that I have not let myself and those who trust me down. thats all that counts aint it?

The Girl

I think I'm a white rose
U can only be born into being a white rose,
Not stained into one.
I like my thorns
A rose by that of any other name should smell just as sweet

Ticks of her life

I like Snow
I like White
I like U

Crosses in her life

My dislikes depend on my mood
